SILVERFAST EPSON 4990 SOFTWARE
As you can see, there's not much space for your photos.Īs is often the case with software from hardware manufacturers, Epson Scan's Professional Mode user interface feels quite dated and somewhat unintuitive.

SILVERFAST EPSON 4990 WINDOWS
Epson Scan feels a bit dated and lacks some featuresĮpson Scan shown in Professional mode with all windows open except the configuration dialog. Let's start off by looking at interfaces. Since I'm looking at this from the perspective of film scanning, I'm limiting my comparisons solely to scanning of positive and negative strip film and slides, and won't be considering features like document or photo print scanning, copying, OCR, and the like. VueScan Professional, meanwhile, is ordinarily $99.95.
SILVERFAST EPSON 4990 PLUS
SilverFast SE Plus costs $99, although it was included free in the bundle with our Epson V850 Pro.

SILVERFAST EPSON 4990 WINDOWS 10
We understand it addresses some of our concerns, but have not yet tested it ourselves.Īll three applications were tested with Windows 10 version 1909 on a 2018 Dell alongside an Epson Perfection V850 Pro scanner. Unfortunately, SilverFast version 9 was issued after this article had been completed, but before it made it through our edit queue. To do so, I compared Epson Scan 3.9.3.4 – which comes bundled with the company's Perfection-series photo scanners and seems nicely representative of manufacturer-supplied software – with two of the most popular third-party alternatives, LaserSoft Imaging's SilverFast SE Plus 8.8.0r22 and Hamrick Software's VueScan Professional Edition 9.7.35. If you're like me, you probably still have years' worth of unscanned slides and negatives waiting to be tended to some rainy day, and a COVID lockdown gives you a golden opportunity.īut are you better off using the software that came with your scanner, or should you shell out for a third-party alternative to get the best results? Before I rolled up my sleeves and started scanning, I wanted to answer this question for myself. but at this point it is probably the best flat bed scanner available (or the v750, which is the same with the newton glass).A difficult 2020 that has blended into a difficult 2021 has made it harder for many of us to get outside and shoot, but that doesn't mean you have to neglect your photography. though it scans fine when i tape negs to the glass even though that distance is much different that using the v700 holder.Īside from that, no issues other than the lid still not pressing down firmly on prints, so i still have to use a heavy book and white paper when scanning polaroids. i tried using it with the v700 and the scans were much softer, i guess because it wasn't the correct distance from the glass. getting better at it, but the holder for the 4490 was much easier to use. i've started to wear gloves because i have to manhandle the film so much trying to get it flat. it's really difficult to get the film flat, always wants to curl and warp. The one thing i don't particularly like is is the 120 film holder. nice to be able to scan 4x5 and larger in one shot, unlike previously where i had to scan in two halfs. still, this v700 is at least twice as fast as the 4490, and the scan quality is obviously much better.
SILVERFAST EPSON 4990 UPDATE
so the scanners are getting older but they update the software. i don't think there are any new flatbed scanner designs, except for combo scanner/fax/copier things, because most magazines are all digital now. none of the epson scanners are 'new'.they are all like from 2007. I had to finally stop using my 4490 because of color lines all over the scans, so i got a v700. Also I think on the V500 and V600 one can only load one strip of 120 at a time, whereas on the 4990 I was able to scan six frames at once.Īny one have any experience with the new line of Epson scanners or have anything else to add? Is there something else I should be considering? If anyone in Europe had a 4990 available to sell, I'd love to know about it. Will I notice a difference? The V700 is 4.0 Dmax as well with a substantial bump in the optical resolution. So, which is really comparable to my old 4990? I don't really need the extra resolution since I am scanning 97.2% medium format anyway I am more worried about the Dmax or optical density- my 4990 was rated at 4.0 Dmax, but the V500 and 600 are both only 3.4 Dmax. which is much more than I remember paying for my 4990, and much more than I can spare at the moment! However, I am in Germany and it seems one's lucky to find a V700 under 500€. According to the Epson website, the V700 has now replaced the 4990. I'm looking to replace my old Epson 4990.
